Ellen Kieffer

ellen Ellen Kieffer is a bay area artist who received her Bachelor of Arts and her Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from San Jose State University. She also holds a Professional Designation in Printmaking from UCLA.

Kieffer's first monotypes were in the mid 1980's. Since then she has focused primarily on this process and has    developed unique methods of printing. She combines several separate plexiglass plates, along with etching plates and other stencils.  Ellen finds the process deeply rewarding, poetic and joyful.

Kieffer has eight times been "artist in residence" at Masereel Grafik Centrum in Belgium. Among numerous awards she received in the Nathan Olivera, "Award of Excellence." Ellen taught monotype classes at the Pacific Art League of Palo Alto for over 20 years and gives lessons at her home studio.

For me, Ellen’s art is rich with metaphors, themes, and beauty.  Most inspiring, are her paintings created for art exhibits.  Ellen has been commissioned to visually interpret and express contemporary issues. Here you will find several of these iconic images.

DISCOVERING YOUR ART INSIGHTS:

Carefully study and discover your own interpretations.  There are untitled images for which you can title your interpretation.  For other images examine the artists interpretations.  If you were asked to paint this title, what colors would you use?  What images come to mind?  Are the artist’s interpretations congruent with your interpretation?  If not, what is your interpretation?

Visiting art exhibits with Ellen is fun and never boring.  It is not a somber experience, where you stand in awe of art, or feel like you are on sacred ground.  When Ellen takes you into a room at the art museum, she will give you one minute to pick out your favorite piece of art.  That is just the beginning.

DISCOVER YOUR ART INSIGHTS:

Visit an art museum with just yourself or invite others to join you. Make the most of your experience by bringing your own list of questions.  Which art speaks of anger?  Which painting brings you peace?  Which one is the most realistic?  Which painting is the happiest?  Journal about your experience while it is fresh.
